i am so excited about our livestream this week! I love seeing you talk with so much passion about writing. I am so happy we are both sliding out of our reading slumps haha. Also, questions for you. I am curious how you are acquiring different plants for the garden and what access is like on Pico. Are you able to buy fruit trees, how is access to seeds or seedlings, are you buying plants, getting cuttings from friends, seed saving etc. Is there a garden store on Pico?

I would like to ask if you have experience with growing fruit. What works well in the Azores? Pineapples in a greenhouse, that's well known. I grow avocados in Spain, and I think the Azores have an ideal climate for avocados. Wind is a bit of a problem but avocados grow quickly and soon mend after a storm. Also maracuyá or guava should do well. I have been to the Azores and have not seen this fruit. I have seen papaya with green fruit but the summer is too short like in Spain and the fruit don't have time to ripen I think. You have lived there a long time, do you have any experience?

Hi Tasmin, I am not an expert but looks like your passion fruit tree has the woodiness virus or anthracnose or Fungal Spot. This fungus reduces the production and in the market no one buys them because they are "ugly". After you harvest all the passion fruit, the best you can do is remove the complete tree, pickup any fallen leaves and fruit to help stop the disease spreading. Spread ashes from barbecue or bonfires over the passion fruit soil to disinfect the area and also to provide minerals to the soil and then in the proper season plant a new passion fruit tree. Hello Tasmin, thank you for making this video. I wanted to see something of the authentic life and culture of Pico island. Many people only show themselves and/or nature. Others are only tourists, who don't have an idea nor time for the people of Pico, for Pico's life. They just look at the island as another adventure. Your perspective honored the island, the ocean and its people. Thank you.

As far as activities I can see why many do socially hang out at local cafes!! Since you are limited in the island

100% true. I live on Terceira and feel absolutely the same. Probably, I can add 3 notes: 1. Regarding luxury, you can see some rather luxurious cars crossing the island in summer. But I guess it's more likely the tourists who can afford that. 2. And the weather. For me, it's a more subjective thing, but here +30 feels much more comfortable than +30 in the city because here it's mostly windy, especially close to the ocean. Anyway the sun is harsh, and you should always put sun protection on you from April till almost November no matter how naturally tant you are. 3. I would suggest to people who would like to move here to rent accommodation for the first year before buying your own house. There are a lot of houses on sale here, so I guess if you bought one, it might be a bit of a problem to sell it if you change your mind.

Quite cool! I also bought a small property in Pico few years ago near Ribeiras . The house is in complete ruin... I had no time yet to visit. :-( Dividing my time between Portugal and Germany at the moment

Life is so funny, and you are so brave. I’m from America, but I live in Germany now with my little family. My life path is impossible to explain; there’s so much trauma, changes, loss, and confusion. When I went to Portugal for the first time, a feeling like I’ve never felt before hit me so hard. I’ve lived in many countries, climates, and cultures. I’ve travelled extensively, for which I’m so grateful for. But I never thought I’d experience that feeling that I have in Portugal. I left having bought a house, knowing I’d come back. It’s been several years and I’m filled with the same pure joy every time I visit (we will move there permanently once our kids finish their Abitur). I see that same experience in you, and it’s so special. We are the lucky ones. Thank you for sharing your story!
